Cued Speech Information

Cued Speech is a sound-based visual communication system which, in English, uses eight handshapes in four different locations along with the natural mouth movements of speech, to "cue" the different sounds of a spoken language. Cued Speech identifies each distinctive speech sound. The eight handshapes each represent consonant sounds. The locations which are all near the mouth, identify vowel sounds. A handshape and a location together cue a syllable and when combined with the movements of the mouth, the syllable is made clear. You cannot cue read the hand alone, the lip movements are necessary for the system to work.
